Believing that participation in rule would somehow be afforded to oneself is a mental misstep common to our age. Our forebears in more imperial times probably didn't labour under nearly as many dillusions.

If any ascended person should come along, they will appear along a less than predictable route. They will not come in via technocrat upbringing and probably will not be from within the political-media class. That class has in my view lost the ability to bring about great men.

We often think in similar categories. The decades since the European Civil War have been marked by a general decline in capabilities, especially amongst our economic elites and in the political-media class.

The world view of Openness facilitated a lot of that as its arbitrary nature generally allowed lesser men ascend to prominence.

It would be truly interesting to see what a different Weltanschauung and a few ascended characters could lead to.

True. I often think a lot of the kind of "illiberal" thinking is trying to get to this point. many think there needs to be a new aristocracy, many (naturally) think it includes them, but people won't actually come out and say what will mark them apart. It has to be something other than a history of compliance and moderate success since the age of ten which is the hallmark of the technocrat.
